- Take a small group of kids downtown for a “Free Fun
Day”; visit the Downtown library, Circle Centre Mall and
the Canal at no cost to you!-Try to bring a group that may not
have the opportunity otherwise (from your neighborhood, church or
your children’s school friends).
- Volunteer at Gleaners for one day (you’ll be
back!)
- Plant a few flowers this spring in the yard or window box of
an elderly neighbor.
- Clean out your closets and anonymously give your unused
treasures to someone you know is in need.
- Pick one day a week to consciously smile at every stranger
you see (happiness is contagious!)
- Pay for someone’s gas.
- Offer to help someone with yard work.
- Pay for someone’s dinner.
- Help someone load groceries into their car.
- Give someone flowers
- Offer to baby-sit for free for a single parent or family
working multiple jobs.
- Give someone in need diapers.
- Mow your neighbor’s yard.
- Offer to drive a shut-in to church or to the store.
- Hold the door for a mom with a stroller trying to get in a
store or an elderly person.
- Volunteer to read to someone at a nursing home.
- Have a clothing drive at work to donate to a homeless
shelter.
- Volunteer with your pet for pet therapy at a nursing home or
children’s hospital ward.
- Pay for a kid to play in a youth sports league.
- Visit a nursing home.
- Donate your kid’s old toys to charity.
- Buy lunch for an intern.
- “Grow an extra row”-If you are planning on
planting a garden this year, grow a row to give away.
- Talk to your director of your children’s daycare;
donate a little extra money to pay for an outing or field trip
for a child that may not be able to afford to go.
- Buy a little extra at the grocery store every week to give
away to your local food bank, church pantry, or neighbor in
need.
- Donate your outgrown children’s clothing to a friend,
neighbor or church pantry instead of selling it.
- Let someone go in front of you in the check out line.
Especially if you have a cart full and they only have a few
items.
- Give at least one compliment a day to someone different.
- Weed someone’s garden.
- Give someone an anonymous bouquet of flowers.
- Put a quarter in an expired or close to expired parking
meter.
- Leave a thank you note for someone who helps you everyday
(the postman, secretary at work, etc.)
- Dedicate your time by volunteering at a local school or
organization.
- Be nice and sympathetic to telemarketers!
- Bake something for your neighbor for no reason.
- Leave an extra gracious tip the next time you eat at a
restaurant, even if the service is just average.
- Pick up trash you see on the ground.
- Pay for the movie tickets for the person behind you.
- Volunteer at your local animal shelter.
- Share your umbrella with someone who doesn’t have
one.
- Leave extra change in the vending machine.
- Check on an elderly neighbor who has no relatives
nearby.
- Volunteer to go grocery shopping for a neighbor who
can’t get out.
- Shovel the walk and drive of an elderly neighbor.
- Pick up the tab for the person behind you in the drive
thru.
- Find someone in need of financial assistance-assist with a
light bill, electric bill, mortgage, etc.
- Do a fundraiser at school.
- Be BIG-sign up to mentor a child through Big Brothers, Big
Sisters.
- Invited the less fortunate to dinner or a movie.
- Go out of your way to help someone you might have wronged in
the past.
- Pray!
- Get together with a group and pick up trash for a stretch of
road.
- Have a foreign exchange student(s) from a local college over
for Easter dinner (or any holiday).
- Volunteer at your local elementary school (field trip
chaperone, read to 1st graders, etc.)
- Take a homeless person out for lunch.
- Write a supportive and caring letter to a friend.
- Give your kids a hug.
- Call your parents and thank them.
- Carry extra change on you so you always have something to
give to the homeless.
- Return your shopping cart and a wayward cart to the corral in
the grocery store parking lot.
- Deliver a neighbor’s newspaper to their front
door.
- Volunteer for a position/committee with your church,
neighborhood association, kid’s school, etc.
- Pay for someone’s lunch on campus (it’s just an
extra swipe of your meal plan).
- Help a struggling classmate study.
- Send a ‘Thank You’ card to your favorite former
teacher/professor.
- Leave a nice note on your receipt and at least a 15% tip the
next time you have great hospitality service while dining.
- Give bus fare to someone at a bus stop.
- Give the Gift of Life-Donate Blood!
- Throw a birthday party for a child whose parents have been
laid off.
- Pull over to help someone whose vehicle is stranded instead
of driving past them.
- Send an anonymous gift to your child’s teacher thanking
them for their efforts.
- Have your kids volunteer with you at a charitable
organization.
- Put your extra change in the tip jars placed on counters at
restaurants and stores.
- Carry around a $5-$10 restaurant gift card and hand one out
to someone who needs a meal or a pick-me-up.
- Say hello to people.
- Go to church with your family.
- Tell people you work with that they are doing a good
job.
- Let someone in when you are in traffic.
- Always hold the door open for people.
